About me

my process

I’m Jenn Kane. I design hand-drawn, romantic patterns for textiles, home goods, stationery, and packaging. I use soft pastel colors and clean repeats, so designs look great on fabric and print well on paper.

How I got here

I have a degree in photography and chemistry. I spent years learning art basics in drawing and painting classes. My favorite was alla prima still life with oil paints. In the San Francisco Bay Area, I discovered letterpress and fell in love with paper, design, and ink. I’ve always liked making things by hand: scrapbooks, art books, and small print projects.

After my daughter was born, I needed an art style that fit family life (oil paint and toddlers don’t mix). Surface pattern design clicked. It lets me make art that lives on paper and fabric, from clothes to gift wrap.

What I design

I love drawing flowers, leaves, vines, and fruit. My style is soft and romantic, with colors like blush, butter yellow, dusty blue, and sage. I make neat, small to medium repeats that look good as wallpaper, on clothing and print well on stationery.

How I make the art (end-to-end)

1

Sketch & ink

I start by sketching in pencil, then tracing in pen to keep the hand-drawn look.

2

Scan & vectorize

I scan the drawings and turn them into vector art in Adobe Illustrator. I clean the lines and prep each motif.

3

Palette building

I choose colors from a mood board, testing soft “romantic” palettes that print well on fabric and paper.

4

Repeat construction

I arrange the motifs into balanced repeats, and check the size so they work on clothes and small paper items.

5

Proofing & mockups

I make test tiles and quick mockups to check spacing, flow, and coverage before I finish.

6

Prep for production

I deliver Adobe Illustrator files with the repeat tiles, ready for you to sample and review.
